Main Street
A British high street under Mediterranean sun.
Main Street stretches roughly a kilometre through the heart of Gibraltar, from Casemates Square in the north to Southport Gates in the south.
Here you will find British chain stores and old family shops side by side; pubs with pies and cold pints; pharmacies, perfumes and electronics at duty-free prices.
Stop for fish and chips, or a cup of tea, and listen. People switch between English and Spanish mid-sentence in a local way of speaking called Llanito.
On the quieter side streets, old Genoese balconies and Jewish shopfronts remind you that this place has always been a crossroads.
Where to listen
- Start at the Casemates end and walk south: the guide follows the street in that direction.
- Mornings are quieter; cruise-ship days fill the street from late morning onwards.
What to look for
- Red pillar boxes, British shopfronts and Genoese shutters on the same façade.
- The side lanes climbing east: they are steep, quiet and full of everyday Gibraltar.
- The cathedral and the synagogue, both a short detour from the main axis.
