Moorish Castle

Medieval fortress from the Islamic era.

Best for
Medieval history, short visit
Accessibility
Steep narrow stairs inside the Tower of Homage.

Intro

The Tower of Homage, visible from across the bay, is the most prominent remnant of a larger medieval castle complex founded by the Marinid dynasty.

The Moorish Castle is the most visible reminder of Gibraltar's Islamic centuries. The Tower of Homage, the dominant element, was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Marinid dynasty on the site of an earlier fortress that gave Jabal Tariq its name.

Walking through the rebuilt rooms gives a sense of medieval defence, and the views over the bay and the modern city below add useful perspective.
