Currency and payments in Gibraltar

Shops on Main Street where pounds and euros are used

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar pound (GIP), pegged one-to-one to the British pound (GBP). British notes circulate normally; Gibraltar notes are not always accepted back in the UK or Spain.

Euros are widely accepted on Main Street, in shops and most restaurants, but exchange rates at the till are rarely as good as paying in pounds or by card.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere — contactless works on small purchases, and most pubs, cafés and museums take Visa and Mastercard without a minimum amount.

ATMs are easy to find around Casemates Square and Main Street. Withdrawing pounds is usually cheaper than changing cash at a bureau de change.

Good to know

  • Change can sometimes be given in either pounds or euros — check before walking away.
  • Some smaller shops round the euro price up; paying in pounds is usually a touch cheaper.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing a lot of euros to pounds for a few hours' visit — usually unnecessary.
  • Accepting Gibraltar notes as change and trying to spend them later in Spain.

Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
