Customs and what not to carry across the Gibraltar border

Border area where customs checks apply

Gibraltar is a separate customs territory. When returning to Spain you pass through Spanish customs, which apply allowances on tobacco, alcohol, perfumes and high-value goods like electronics.

These limits are personal and per crossing — splitting purchases among the group does not multiply the allowance arbitrarily, and Spanish officers can and do check.

Tobacco is the most common reason for stops. Carrying more than the personal allowance, even ‘for friends’, can result in seizure and a fine.

Receipts help. Keep them visible if you are crossing back with shopping, and never accept to carry items for strangers — even small ones.

Good to know

  • Allowances are set by Spanish and EU customs, not by Gibraltar, and they change — check the official Spanish customs guidance before a big purchase.
  • Controls on the way out of Gibraltar are usually the slow part of the crossing, more than the passport check.
  • Goods bought for personal use are treated differently from goods that look intended for resale; quantity is what draws attention.
  • Car boots, bags and coolers can all be inspected, on foot and by vehicle.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Splitting one large purchase between travellers to stretch the allowance — officers recognise the pattern.
  • Carrying tobacco 'as a favour' for someone else; the person carrying it is the one fined.
  • Throwing away receipts, which makes it harder to prove what you paid and where.

Frequently asked

Is there a customs check every time?

Not every vehicle or pedestrian is stopped, but checks are routine and can happen at any time, especially at busy hours.

What is checked most often?

Tobacco, alcohol and perfumes, plus high-value electronics. Quantity beyond normal personal use is what triggers questions.

Do the limits apply per person or per car?

They are personal allowances. Grouping purchases in one car does not create a larger shared allowance.

Where do I find the current limits?

On the official Spanish customs information. Figures change, so confirm them before travelling rather than relying on older advice.

Check official information before travelling.

Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
