Welcome to Gibraltar
A warm introduction for visitors arriving from the south of Spain or Morocco.
Welcome to Gibraltar. You are standing at one of the most unusual places in Europe: a British territory on the southern tip of Spain, facing Africa across a narrow strait.
In a single day you can walk British streets, hear Spanish spoken as naturally as English, visit a mosque and a cathedral minutes apart, and look out over two continents from the top of the Rock.
Take your time. Drink water, wear comfortable shoes, and keep your belongings closed when approaching the apes. Gibraltar rewards curiosity.
Where to listen
- Best listened to right after crossing the frontier, while you walk along Winston Churchill Avenue towards the town.
- It also works on the bus from the border, or while you wait for your first coffee in Casemates Square.
What to look for
- The airport runway you cross on foot or by bus: few borders in the world look like this.
- Bilingual signs and conversations that switch between English and Spanish mid-sentence.
- The Rock itself, growing steadily larger as you walk south.
