Discover Gibraltar

Border to Rock walking route — from La Línea to the Cable Car

The classic on-foot route most visitors take from La Línea into Gibraltar and up to the Rock.

Estimated time: About 45–60 minutes one way
Start
La Línea de la Concepción town centre
End
Cable Car base, Gibraltar
Difficulty
Easy — flat, paved, signposted in English and Spanish
Best for
Day-trippers from Spain, cruise add-on visitors, anyone avoiding Gibraltar parking

This is the route most visitors actually use: park (or arrive by bus) in La Línea, walk through Spanish customs, cross the Gibraltar airport runway on foot, and continue south to Casemates Square, Main Street and the Cable Car base. It avoids the vehicle queue, gives you the only airport-runway crosswalk in the world, and drops you within view of the apes in under an hour.

Carry passport or EU/EEA ID for every person, including children. Bring a refillable bottle; you'll pass shaded fountains in Casemates.

Step-by-step itinerary

  1. 1

Park or arrive in La Línea

Most visitors leave the car in La Línea and walk to the border gate. From the town centre it is a short, signposted walk.

    10 min walk

  2. 2

    Cross the border

Passport or ID ready. Follow the pedestrian route — usually faster than the vehicle queue.

    5–20 min depending on queue

  3. 3

    Runway crossing

You cross the airport runway on foot. Follow the traffic signals — they pause crossings when a plane is landing or taking off.

    5 min

  4. 4

    Winston Churchill Avenue

After the runway, follow the main avenue south. Signposts point to the town centre and Casemates Square.

    10 min walk

  5. 5

    Casemates Square

The natural entrance to the old town — cafés, shaded benches and the start of Main Street. A good place for a short break.

  6. 6

    Main Street stroll

Walk the pedestrian high street: British red post boxes, Spanish voices, perfume and electronics shops, the cathedral and small squares.

  7. 7

    Cable Car base

End the walking route at the Cable Car base near the Alameda Gardens. Take the cable car up for views, the apes and the Upper Rock — or end the walk here if you prefer.

Walking / transport notes

  • •Walk from La Línea border across the airport runway.
  • •No tickets needed for the walk itself — only at the Cable Car or Nature Reserve.

Practical warnings

  • Queues at the border vary widely — check the live situation before travelling.
  • Bring a passport or valid ID for everyone in your group.
  • Short on time? Stop at Casemates Square and the Cable Car base instead of doing the full Upper Rock.

Good to know

  • The runway crossing is unique — even non-aviators stop to film it.
  • Free public toilets at the Cable Car base and Casemates.
  • If you push a stroller, the pedestrian side has dropped curbs all the way.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Going in your car for a quick visit — vehicle queues can take more than two hours; walking is almost always faster.
  • Forgetting kids need their own ID document.
  • Booking a return train from La Línea too close to your re-entry time.

Frequently asked

Can I really walk across the airport runway?

Yes — it's the official pedestrian route. A barrier closes it for a few minutes whenever a plane uses the runway.

Do I need a UK visa to enter Gibraltar?

Visa rules follow Gibraltar's own immigration policy. EU/EEA, UK and many other nationalities don't need one for short visits — check before travelling.

Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
