Gibraltar in 3 hours
Short visit covering the essentials from La Línea.
- Start
- La Línea border (pedestrian gate)
- End
- Casemates Square / Main Street
- Difficulty
- Easy, mostly flat plus cable car
- Best for
- Cruise visitors, day-trippers from the Costa del Sol, first-timers short on time
If you only have a morning or an afternoon, this is the most efficient way to see Gibraltar from La Línea. You cross the border on foot, ride the cable car to the top of the Rock, meet the apes, and walk down Main Street back to Spain — all without renting a car.
Plan around the border queue: weekday mid-mornings are usually calmest. Bring a passport (or EU/EEA ID), some pounds or a contactless card, and a light jacket — the summit is windier and cooler than the town.
Step-by-step itinerary
- 1

15–25 min walk

Practical warnings
- Border queues can be long on weekends and summer afternoons.
- Cable car closes in strong Levante wind.
Good to know
- The cable car ticket includes entry to St. Michael's Cave, Apes' Den, Skywalk and Windsor Bridge.
- Pay in pounds, euros or by card — change is given in pounds.
- Pedestrian crossing is normally faster than the vehicle queue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to drive across the border for a 3-hour visit — parking on the Spanish side and walking is faster.
- Feeding or touching the apes — it's illegal and they bite.
- Forgetting that Gibraltar uses British plugs (Type G).
Frequently asked
Is 3 hours enough for Gibraltar?
Yes for a first taste — cable car, apes and Main Street. For St. Michael's Cave, the tunnels and Europa Point, plan a full day.
Do I need a passport?
Yes. EU/EEA national ID cards are also accepted; UK driving licences are not.
Can I pay in euros?
Most shops and the cable car accept euros, but exchange rates vary and change is given in pounds.
Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
