Gibraltar enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and short, mild winters. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for walking the Upper Rock.
The local wind is the Levante (from the east). When it blows, a famous ‘cap’ of cloud forms on top of the Rock — beautiful from below, but it can hide the view from the top and even suspend the cable car.
In summer the city centre and Main Street get hot from midday onwards. Plan the Upper Rock for early morning or late afternoon, when the light is better and the heat softer.
Bring a light layer year-round. Sea breezes and shaded streets cool down quickly, even in July, and the top of the Rock is always a few degrees lower than Casemates.
