Viewpoints route
The best photo spots on the Rock and at Europa Point.
- Start
- Cable car base
- End
- Europa Point lighthouse
- Difficulty
- Easy to moderate — paved paths plus optional steps
- Best for
- Photographers, hikers and anyone visiting on a clear day
Gibraltar's geography is its show: three continents and two seas line up on a clear morning. This route strings together the best vantage points — the glass Skywalk above Apes' Den, the top cable car station, the Mediterranean Steps for the wildest panorama, and Europa Point at sunset.
Check the wind first: the Levante (easterly) brings a thick 'cap cloud' that hides the top of the Rock and ruins photos. Westerly mornings are usually clearer.
Step-by-step itinerary

A glass platform 340 m above the Mediterranean — the showpiece view of Africa and the Strait.

A 360° terrace over the bay, the Strait and the Spanish hinterland — perfect at sunrise.

- 3

- 4

1 hour
Walking / transport notes
- •Cable car and walking on Upper Rock.
- •Bus 2 from Market Place to Europa Point in about 15 minutes.
Practical warnings
- Strong Levante wind can close the cable car and the Skywalk.
- Mediterranean Steps are exposed; never attempt in rain or fog.
Good to know
- Sunrise is best from the top station; sunset is best from Europa Point.
- Check the weather app for cloud cap before buying the cable car ticket.
- A wide lens captures the Africa skyline better than a phone zoom.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Climbing the Mediterranean Steps upward — they're far easier and safer going down.
- Skipping a hat at the Skywalk in summer — there's no shade.
- Arriving at Europa Point at midday — light is flat and harsh.
Frequently asked
Can you see Africa from Gibraltar?
Yes — the Moroccan Rif is visible on most clear days, best at sunrise or just before sunset.
Is the Skywalk safe if I fear heights?
The glass is thick and tested for 5× a 747's weight, but the visible drop is real — many people stay near the rail.
Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
