Discover Gibraltar

Family route

Easy stops that work with kids and strollers.

Estimated time: Half to full day
Start
La Línea border (pram-friendly walk)
End
Sandy Bay or Casemates Square
Difficulty
Easy, mostly shaded and flat
Best for
Families with kids 3–12, grandparents, slower-paced visitors

Gibraltar with children works best at a slower rhythm: shade-rich gardens in the morning, a cable car ride to meet the apes mid-morning, then a beach or a calm waterfront for the afternoon. The compact size of the Rock makes it ideal — nothing is more than a 15-minute walk or short bus ride away.

Strollers and prams cross the border on the pedestrian side without problem. Plan a snack and shade stop every two hours in summer.

Step-by-step itinerary

  1. 1

    Alameda Gardens

Shade, a playground and the small Wildlife Park with rescued exotic animals.

    1 hour

  2. 2

    Cable car & apes

Always a hit with children — keep bags closed and snacks hidden so the apes don't grab them.

    1.5 hours

  3. 3

    Sandy Bay beach

Golden sand and calm water in summer — perfect for a long late lunch and a swim.

    2–3 hours

Walking / transport notes

  • •Walking and bus 4 to Sandy Bay.
  • •Cable car up; descend on the same cable car to spare little legs.
  • •Alameda Gardens has lots of shade and benches.

Practical warnings

  • Never feed or touch the apes — fines and bite risk.
  • Sandy Bay has limited shade; bring an umbrella in summer.

Good to know

  • Public toilets at the cable car base, Alameda and Casemates.
  • Several cafés on Main Street have kids' menus and high chairs.
  • Strollers fit easily in the cable car cabins.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Letting kids hold sandwiches outside at Apes' Den — apes will snatch them.
  • Underestimating sun on the Upper Rock — hats and water are essential.
  • Trying to do the Mediterranean Steps with small children.

Frequently asked

Is the cable car safe for toddlers?

Where can we change a baby?

Alameda Gardens, the cable car base and most cafés on Main Street have changing tables.

Always check official Gibraltar and border information before travelling, especially on busy weekends, holidays or during special events.
